WHF Profile: Jeremy Hosein (2018-19)
I first learned about the fellowship while interning for my U.S. Senator during college. With my interests in policy, politics and medicine, I held on to the hope that I would meet the high qualifications and expectations of a Fellow someday! I completed the Fellowship during my medical training. I had two assignments in the White House Office of Legislative Affairs and the Department of Health and Human Services. In a prior career, I spent time working as policy advisor to the governor of Nebraska, and I was grateful that the program and my placements used my background and experience to make the most out of an incredible year. I advised the HHS Secretary on a diplomatic health mission in South America, pitched value-based health care initiatives to Congress, learned the policy process in the White House, and cultivated deep and lasting relationships in the program and workplace. My first child was also born during my fellowship year, and I have fond memories of sharing this experience with my classmates. Being around highly accomplished people in my class who constantly challenged, inspired, and pushed me to be a better father, husband and professional was an unexpected but remarkable part of the experience. The Fellowship invests in its Fellows, and I gained incredible domestic and foreign policy experience, mentorship and professional skills to become a better communicator and leader in my current role as a neurosurgeon.
